Russia sweeps Poland in men’s Olympic quarterfinal

Maxim Mikhaylov scored 13 points and Russiadefeated Poland in straight sets Wednesday advance to the men’s volleyball semifinals at the London Olympics.

Dmitriy Muserskiy added 12 points in the 25-17, 25-23, 25-21 victory for second-ranked Russia, which will play the winner of Wednesday night’s late match between Bulgaria and Germany on Friday. Continue reading

Dolega could give Poland 2nd weightlifting gold

Marcin Dolega is in a good position to win Poland’s second weightlifting gold medal in the London Olympics after his top rivals in the 105-kilogram class withdrew.

Poland defeat Britain in “home” teams clash

Poland made the Earl’s Court volleyball arena their own on Saturday as an army of supporters roared them on to a 3-0 win over hosts Britain.

More red and white flags than Union Jacks were on show in the west London venue and the noisy Polish fans helped the medal-contenders to a 25-16, 25-19, 25-18 win that put them second behind Bulgaria in Group A. Continue reading

Polish underdog bags gold

Poland’s Adrian Edward Zielinski has won the gold medal in weightlifting men’s 85kg category with a total of 385kg.

Zielinski, 23, standing in the third place with the snatch of 174kg, showed off his strength in clean-and-jerk with the final attempt of 211kg to take the gold away from 19-year-old Russian Apti Aukhadov, by virtue of his lighter bodyweight, as both athletes totalled 385kg. Continue reading
